If you own a Yorkshire Terrier then it’s really important you learn how to care for their coat.  If you don’t take the time to do this, then their coat can become matted and messy.  The following tips will help you in this task:

  • One way to look after the Yorkshire Terriers coat is to give them regular baths.  This should ideally be done weekly, however it also depends on how dirty they get!   A vital tip when bathing your Yorkshire Terrier is to never, ever use human shampoo and conditioner as this isn’t meant to be used on dogs.  Instead use proper dog shampoo and conditioner.  You should be able to purchase this from your local pet store or vet.
  • Brushing the Yorkshire Terriers coat is another important grooming task.  Ideally, this should be done daily.  A good tip is to keep the hair a little wet when brushing as this will help stop the hair from breaking.  Brushing your Yorkshire Terriers coat is also a great way to bond with your beloved pet.
  • The Yorkshire Terriers coat also needs regular trimming.  You can trim your Yorkshire Terriers coat into a certain style yourself; however this can be somewhat difficult.  If you feel you are not up to the task then a professional groomer will be able to do this for you.

More Grooming Duties

Looking after the Yorkshire Terrier coat is only just the start of the grooming process.  There are further grooming tasks you need to be aware of including clipping their nails, checking their teeth and looking after their ears.  Read on to learn more:

  • Clipping your Yorkshire Terriers nails is just as important as looking after the Yorkshire Terrier coat.  Clipping their nails has to be done on a regular basis.  When clipping your Yorkshire Terriers nails, it’s important that you do not cut the quick which can be difficult.  If you feel that this task may be too hard for you, then again, a groomer or even your local vet will be able to do this for you.
  • You may think it strange to brush your Yorkshire Terriers teeth!  However it can help prevent teeth problems including infections, yucky breath and gum diseases to name just a few.  You should be able to purchase special dog toothpaste at your local pet store or vet.  If you are not sure how to brush your Yorkshire Terriers teeth then your vet should be able to give you a few pointers.
  • When doing a task such as brushing the Yorkshire Terrier coat, it’s a good idea to take some time to check their ears.  Have a look for dirtiness or wax. If you find some, you can clean this out carefully with a cotton bud and special dog ear liquid (your local vet or pet store should stock this).  Also, it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for redness or infection while cleaning their ears.  If you are worried that your Yorkshire Terrier does have an ear infection, then you should ideally book an appointment at your local vet as they will be able to help you treat the problem.

The Yorkshire Terriers coat is beautiful!  However, as you can see from the above it does require some grooming.  If you are unsure about grooming the Yorkshire Terrier coat yourself then a professional groomer will be able to help you out.  And remember, looking after the Yorkshire Terrier coat is just the beginning – you also need to keep an eye out on their nails, teeth and ears.  If you do all these things, you will have a happy, healthy Yorkshire Terrier with a beautiful coat!
