Breeding Yorkshire Terriers

Are you thinking about breeding Yorkshire Terriers?  This is a huge commitment and one not to be undertaken lightly.  Read on to learn more.

Breeding Yorkshire TerriersSome important questions you need to ask yourself

Before you start breeding Yorkshire Terriers, there are a number of important questions you will need to ask yourself:

  • Will you have the time to look after a litter of Yorkshire Terrier puppies until they are big enough to be handed over to their new owners at around eight weeks of age?
  • Breeding Yorkshire Terriers is not cheap and there will be expenses.  So – will you be able to afford to pay for suggested health tests on your chosen Yorkshire Terrier bitch prior to breeding?  And if needed, will you be able to afford health tests on the puppies once they are born?
  • If your Yorkshire Terrier has trouble having their puppies then they may need a caesarean – can you afford this expense?
  • Do you know enough about looking after Yorkshire Terrier puppies as you may need to pass on this knowledge to new owners?
  • Do you think you will be able to look after a larger litter of Yorkshire Terrier puppies until they go to their new homes?
  • Do you think you are capable of finding excellent homes for the Yorkshire Terrier puppies?
  • Will you be able to take back a puppy from an owner if things didn’t work out?  Will you be able to find another home for said puppy?
  • Do you have all the information on looking after a litter of Yorkshire Terrier puppies properly e.g. information on vaccinations and worming to name just a few things?

Did you say no to a number of the above questions?  Then breeding Yorkshire Terriers is probably not for you.

But, if you did answer yes to all the above questions, then great, it looks like you are on the right track to breeding Yorkshire Terriers.  But before you can begin, there are a few further things you need to consider before you fully commit to Yorkshire Terrier breeding:

  • A good breeder will be aware of any Yorkshire Terrier health problems and will only breed healthy dogs.
  • Ideally, each puppy that comes from a litter needs to be a step up from their parents.  So you should aim for this.
  • You really need to be organised when breeding Yorkshire Terriers.  Make sure you will be able to provide the best conditions for the breeding and afterwards great conditions for the new litter of Yorkshire Terrier puppies.
  • Once the Yorkshire Terriers puppies are born, you need to be fully committed to them.  You need to be prepared to give answers and information to potential owners.  So, do all you research before you even begin the breeding process.

There you have it – some great questions and information on Yorkshire Terrier breeding.  As mentioned above, you ideally need to have the knowledge and need to be fully committed before you begin the breeding process.   If you feel you can offer this, then breeding Yorkshire Terriers can be a really rewarding experience.
